Meatballs:

  • 1 ½ lb lean ground beef
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • Garlic powder, used liberally
  • ¼ cup milk

Sauce:

  • 3 Tbsp oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup water
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

Mix together ground beef, bread crumbs, eggs, garlic powder and milk. Roll into balls 1 inch in diameter and cook under broiler.

In a large saucepan, sauté onion in oil until clear. Do not brown. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. Place meatballs in sauce and stir carefully. Simmer for 30 to 45 minutes. Serve with toothpicks.

Note: Flavour is enhanced by preparing at least 1 day in advance.
